We don’t apologize for a joke. We are comics. We are here to make you laugh. If you don’t get it, then don’t watch us. —Joan Rivers
Growing up, there was a direct link between Sundays and humor. That link came in the form of the Sunday Comics, the full-color separate section of the newspaper that was the one thing all week worth reading. Of course, in our house reading the paper didn’t come until Sunday afternoon, after church, after dinner. Poppa would take the front section with all the news, Mother would take all the ads and coupons, and my brother and I would fight over who got to read the comics first. Peanuts, Blondie, and Family Circus were the highlight of our week.
Of course, comics today are delivered online, whenever you want them. I’ve not had a Sunday edition of a newspaper hit our front steps in a few years, which is rather sad. As much as I lament the decline of the newspaper, being able to read the Sunday comics at 5:00 AM is rather cool, and there’s no recycling necessary come trash day.
There are other ways to fill one’s Sunday, or any day of the week for that matter, with laughter. There are other kinds of comics besides those running in the Sunday paper; you know, the stand-up kind. Like my friend Courtney Kay Meyers in the pictures above. Actually, I’m not sure CKM is doing a lot of comedy these days. She’s been going to school and is apparently about to graduate next month. At least, I think she’s about to graduate. She sent me an invitation to a graduation party. There may yet be a punchline coming. That’s one of the fun things about comics, though: they keep you thinking and laughing at the same time and most anything is possible.
So, since it’s technically illegal for me to post Blondie or Beetle Bailey here without express written permission, which I don’t have, I’m going to give you that other live-action form of comedy, starting with CKM herself, from about 6 years or so ago, back when she was starving all the time, not just every third day. The other comics are just for fun because it’s Sunday. We all need the laugh.
Melissa McCarthy is absolutely hilarious, as usual, on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
